Dispossessed Bibliography

Often my readers of Dispossessed want to know if this is a true story, and where they can find out more. Although there is no actual person my character Manuel is based on, everything in the novel is drawn from actual events, starting with the mass expulsion of Mexican Americans and Mexican nationals from the U.S.

My novel is inspired by the following:

Decade of Betrayal

For impeccable scholarly research, detailing the mass expulsion and shameful US actions towards its own citizens.

The PBS Documentary Latino Americans

It was the viewing of these episodes, each semester with my students at CSULB that truly compelled me to write this novel, particularly Episode 2, “Empire of Dreams” and the words of Emelia Castañeda.

The Chavez Ravine, 1949 a Los Angeles Story

This book had gorgeous images of the Chavez Ravine community

The Documentary no más bebés

The documentary is on forced sterilization
